History
The museum in the castle of Ungvár presents the most valuable relics of the historical past of Subcarpathia from the Stone Age to the present day. The legacy of Lehoczky Tivadar (1830-1915) forms the basis of the collection of the museum.
In the gallery we can find the great Hungarian painter Munkácsy Mihály's 45 x 37 cm study 'The Head of the Pharisee' painted with oil.
The study was created for the painting 'Christ Before Pilate', part of the world-famous Christ Trilogy, which can currently be seen at the Déry Museum in Debrecen (Hungary).
We can also see the paintings of other great Hungarian painters, such as Révész Imre, Aba-Novák Vilmos, Mednyánszky László and Rudnay Gyula.
The works of Erdélyi Béla, the founder of the Subcarpathian painting school, are of particular interest. He was the greatest Hungarian painter of Subcarpathia in the 20th century. Among his contemporaries, the paintings of Boksay József stand out.
