History
The statues of Zrínyi Ilona and Rákóczi Ferenc II was unveiled in the castle on the Lorántffy bastion in 2006. It is the artwork of the sculptor Matl Pál from Munkács.
Rákóczi Ferenc II was the son of Zrínyi Ilona and Rákóczi Ferenc I. After her husband's death, Ilona married Thököly Imre in 1672. Prince Thököly Imre of Upper Hungary, the leader of the anti-Habsurg kuruc uprising, fortified the castle. The imperial army reached the castle in November 1685. In the absence of her husband, the defenders were led by Zrínyi Ilona. After seven months of fruitless siege, General Caprara withdrew in April 1686, but he took his revenge by plundering the town of Munkács. Carpara returned to the castle in November 1687. By this time it was the last Hungarian castle that had not yet fallen into imperial hands. On January 15, 1688, the castle was handed over by Zrínyi Ilona in exchange for the amnesty granted to the defenders.
Then they put Zrínyi Ilona in a convent in Vienna, and took her son, Rákóczi Ferenc II, from her.
When General Hesiter was captured by Thököly Imre in 1690, Thököly exchanged him for Zrínyi Ilona. She accompanied Thököly Imre into exile in 1699 and died in 1703 in Nicomedia, Turkey.
Rákóczi Ferenc II arrived in Munkács with his army on June 16, 1703, and stayed in the Rákóczi Mansion, as the castle was in the hands of the imperials. It became his headquarters during the War of Independence, and he also minted his coins in Munkács. After the fall of the Hungarian War of Independence in 1711, he went into exile and died in Rodosto, Turkey.
