History
Until 1780, Munkács was the seat of the Greek Catholic diocese, but then Bishop Bacsinszky András moved his seat to Ungvár. Originally, a small wooden church stood here, on the site of which a small stone church was built in 1740 thanks to a local citizen, Oláh György. Its tower was built in 1778. Bishop Olsávszky Mihály began to build a new palace with the financial support of Empress Maria Theresia in 1753 on the plot donated by Count Schönbörn. The oversized residence was not completed even until his death in 1767. In 1780, Bishop Bacsinszky András moved his seat to Ungvár.
In 1800, the bishop came up with the idea of turning the residence in Munkács into a church. Due to lack of money, the church got a roof only in 1834, but its tower was not yet ready.
The finished church was finally consecrated in 1859 by Bishop Popovics Vazul, but the interior decoration was not completed until 1894, when Bishop Friczák Gyula consecrated it again.
In 1947, the Soviets gave the church to the Russian Orthodox Church after having abolished the Greek Catholic Church. Two of its priests (Olekszandr Ilnickij and Tivadar István) died in a labor camp. The church was returned to the Greek Catholics in 1992, emptied, as its equipment were moved to the new Orthodox church.
