History

During the Hungarian War of Independence, Austrian troops broke into Hungary from Galicia under the command of General Barko through the Pass of Verecke on April 22, 1849. The significantly smaller Hungarian army, consisting of mainly local Hungarian and Rusyn insurgents, under the command of Major Martini János forced the enemy to retreat at Podhering, that is now part of Munkács.
