History

There was already a church here as early as the 13th century. It was first remodeled in the late 15th century, when Munkács was owned by the Hunyadi family. In 1567, the army of King John II of Hungary (John Sigismund) took possession of Munkács, but the imperial army of Lazarus von Schwendi soon occupied it again. The church also burned down in the battle. The church was restored by Büdy Mihály, the tenant of the estate of Munkács and also Captain of Munkács Castle. The church was taken over by the Calvinists in the 16th century. In 1657, the church was burnt down by the Poles but afterwards Lorántffy Zsuzsanna, the widow of Prince Rákóczi György I of Transylvania, renovated it. In 1660, Báthory Zsófia, the wife of Prince Rákóczi György II, not only returned the church to the Catholic believers, but also cast a medium-sized bell in its tower. The Calvinists got the church again for a short period thanks to Thököly Imre, the leader of the anti-Habsburg uprising, but after his fall in 1688 it became Catholic again. In 1685, Imperial General Caprara set the town and the church on fire in revenge, after he failed to capture Munkács Castle by siege from Zrínyi Ilona, wife of Thököly Imre and mother of Rákóczi Ferenc II. With the fall of the Hungarian War of Independence in 1711, the estate of Munkács was confiscated from its leader, Rákóczi Ferenc II, and afterwards it was managed by the crown. The church got neglected. The new owner of the estate, Count Schönborn Ervin Jenő, started its renovation only in 1746. Due to its poor condition, Count Schönborn initiated the construction of a new church at the end of the 19th century. In 1904 the church was demolished, leaving only the sanctuary from which the Chapel of St. Michael was formed. The new church was built in an eclectic style according to the plans of Czigler Győző and was consecrated in 1905. On March 27, 2002, the church became the cathedral of the newly founded Roman Catholic Diocese of Munkács. The altarpiece of the closed and damaged church in Zsófiafalva, a painting by Madarász Viktor, can be seen at the entrance. It depicts King St. Stephen as he offers the crown of Hungary to the Virgin Mary.
